Mica Heli Guides is a member of the British Columbia Helicopter
and Snowcat Skiing Operators Association. This Association
sets strict safety standards for operating a Helicopter and/or
Snowcat skiing area. Only by skiing with a member of the B.C.
Helicopter and Snowcat Skiing Operators Association can you
be assured of skiing with certified guides who follow a strict
set of operating procedures.
Safety has always been Mica Heli Guides highest priority and
we use only the most qualified professionals. Dan McDonald
the President of MHG has been in the industry for over 16
years with a perfect record of no fatalities. Our guides and
pilots are fully trained to prevent accidents and limit the
risks, however, there are risks associated with heli-skiing
that each client must be aware of. Every client must read
and sign the B.C. Helicopter and Snowcat Skiing Association
waiver prior to skiing with us. In addition, all skiers and
snowboarders are required to sign a comprehensive release
of liability and waiver prior to participating in wilderness
skiing with Mica Heli Guides.
MHG uses the A-Star six seat helicopter, with room for the
pilot, the guide, and four skiers. This powerful machine has
the ability to shuttle three groups at once without ever having
to wait. The A-Star has an excellent safety record for heli-skiing,
and is the industry standard for customized heli-skiing and
private groups.
The A-Star aircraft are chartered exclusively from Kokanee
Helicopters, whose pilots and engineers are the best in the
industry. Kokanee Helicopters has been in business for over
12 years with a perfect accident free record. Kokanee Helicopters'
Revelstoke base manager, Matthew Callaghan, does the majority
of the flying. Matthew currently has over 8000 hours of mountain
flying experience and is specially trained for this environment.
In 1999 he was awarded an accomplished accident free safety
award. Matthew is also one of two certified Parks Canada Mountain
Rescue Pilots and has been exclusive to our geography. The
Kokanee helicopter engineer is a full-time licensed aircraft
maintenance engineer. He maintains the aircraft to standards
that meet or exceed Ministry of Transport regulations, and
systematically inspects each helicopter at the completion
of every flight day.
The guides are the link between you and your exhilarating,
safe experience in the mountains. As a member of the BC Helicopter
Skiing and Snowcat Skiing Association, MHG guides are certified
members of the IFMGA/UIAGM (International Federation of Mountain
Guiding Assoc) and/or the Association of Canadian Mountain
Guides (ACMG). The standards they follow are the most well
respected safety practices for ski guiding in the world. They
also know how to ski and snowboard, and will ensure that you
will safely achieve the challenge you are looking for.
Before skiing, your guides will brief you on the types of
hazards you may encounter in any given run, and will give
instruction in how to use a transceiver and how to participate
in an avalanche or first-aid rescue. On the mountain, because
of the diversity of terrain which we offer, the guides will
brief you on snow pack stability, crevasses, cliffs, and other
potential hazards as you approach them over the course of
the week.
